This is quite an extraordinary debut novel. It’s a fantasy comedy with large swathes of Terry Pratchett or Ian Rankin. It’s both creative and fun with a plethora of believable characters who inhabit a surprisingly believable world. Inside the head of The Will!

A problem inside the Ear Department leads to all sorts of outrageous situations involving Pirates and Evil Bad Guys. It’s a very strange book in as much as it reads almost like a children’s adventure story but written for adults. A difficult feat to execute and usually only achieved in such places as Hogwarts or Discworld.

The writing is engaging and smooth with a good mix of humour and adventure that will drag you along and make you forget about the lunacy that Murphy has created here. This is a refreshing change from Dragons and Wizards and endless Hobbits!
